Here we’re going to teach you everything you need to know about electric vehicles before purchasing an EV of your own. Plus some of our fan favourites!

At the moment, electric vehicles make up about 2% of the new cars on the road but with the UK’s historic announcement to the end of the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030 we expect to see many more EVs on the road! So what type of eco-friendly cars are currently available on the market?

DIFFERENT TYPES OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES

Before we begin to explore electric vehicles, let’s take a look at some of the abbreviations commonly used to define different types of EVs.

EV: EV is the general catch-all term for an electric vehicle. Pretty simple!

BEV: A BEV, or a battery-powered electric vehicle, is one which solely runs on battery power. This type of vehicle can also be called an AEV, or an all-electric vehicle.

HEV: A HEV is a hybrid electric vehicle. HEVs run on both an internal combustion engine and a battery-powered electric motor.

PHEV: A plug-in hybrid, also known as a PHEV, can plug into a power outlet to charge their batteries. They have both an internal combustion engine and a battery-powered electric motor.

Electric Vehicle Range

Many people are apprehensive about an electric vehicle’s range. While some people may fear running out of charge mid-journey, also known as range anxiety, most EVs today easily accommodate daily driving. As more electric vehicles develop this will only grow.

Smaller EVs such as the Renault ZOE are packing approximately 100 miles on a full charge making journeys super easy. Whereas something more luxurious, such as a Tesla Model S, can travel roughly 250 miles on a single charge, depending on how the vehicle is driven.

Like any petrol or diesel motor, a vehicle’s range before needing a top up can really vary from car to car. There are a couple of things that can reduce an electric vehicle’s range, such as hot weather or cold temperatures. This is simply because you’re more likely to use the air conditioning or heaters within the vehicle.

Charging Electric Vehicles

One huge perk of driving electric is that all EVs can be charged at home or on the go using EV charging stations. This means you can charge your EV overnight and it’ll be ready to drive in the morning, cutting the last minute stops to get fuel!
Of course, charging times will differ depending on what charger you opt for and your individual EV. However, most electric vehicles will have more than enough range from being charged overnight. Likewise, long journeys are made even easier by the online electric charging points map, ZapMap, which shows you where you can charge your EV on the road.
