EV sales soar while petrol and diesel vehicles plummet.

The number of used electric cars in the UK have soared in the past month – nearly matching the figures for the whole of 2019. With panic buying at petrol pumps, it is expected that EV sales will continue to grow.

Could EV sales overtake fuel-powered vehicles sooner than we think?

More than 33,000 pure electric cars were registered in a record month for EVs. This is almost 50% more than last year, as sales of new cars tumbled to the weakest September figures in more than two decades.

The global shortages of HGV drivers have left conventionally fuelled car drivers struggling to fill up . While a computer chip shortage stalled production of new cars for many manufacturers. This meant only 215,312 new cars were registered last month, the lowest since 1998.As imagined, the fuel crisis in the UK is not helping. Inquiries into electric cars, both new and second hand, have been on the rise ever since.

While September is usually the second busiest month for car sales, figures were down by a third from even last September. A time when Covid-19 restrictions were dampening the sales of the whole automotive industry. Mike Hawes, Chief Executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), described the figures as being “desperately disappointing”.

The sale of diesel vehicles continued their steep decline, with 77% fewer sold than a year ago. We can imagine this is due to the lack of diesel available across UK forecourts, mixed with the Government’s introduction of the Ultra Low Emissions Zone in London coming this month.

Whereas, battery powered now hold a quarter of the new car market, up from 11% in August. This is a new record for fully-electric vehicles, with almost 7,000 Tesla Model 3 vehicles alone joining Britain’s roads – now the UK’s best selling EV. Plug-in hybrid cars also increased their share to 6.4%, meaning more than one in five new cars sold in September produced ultra-low emissions.

Which electric cars were most popular?

As we said, the Tesla Model 3 unsurprisingly took the top spot, but what else made the cut? The second most popular EV in September was the incredible ID.3 from Volkswagen. With 250 miles of range and cutting edge technology, the ID.3 is a brilliant affordable choice for EV enthusiasts.

Following closely behind was the Kia e-Niro which again has 250 miles of range and a stylish interior. This EV is ideal for those who do a variety of journeys, including those with younger children or big families. In fourth place was the multi award winning Renault ZOE. The ZOE always comes out on top in terms of people’s choice. It’s convenient, smart and has a surprisingly good range for its size!

Finally, the Audi e-tron took the spot of the fifth most popular electric car in September. The e-tron is everything you’d expect and more from Audi’s first all-electric SUV. It’s big enough to fit the family plus some luggage, but still has that classic aggressive styling Audi is best at. If you’re looking for an EV that’s both practical and stylish, this is the one for you!

Where can I buy an electric vehicle?

As the interest in electric vehicles grows, it’s important to keep up with the herd. The UK is investing heavily in electric cars and green technology. It’s clear to us that electric vehicles are the future of the automotive industry in the UK, and across the globe.

That being said, you may not be completely sold just yet. Even if you are, you might not be ready to spend an arm and a leg on a Tesla Model 3. Our electric vehicle dealership based in Kent is the perfect place to start.

At EV Sales, we pride ourselves in providing quality assured electric vehicles from some of the best manufacturers. All of our vehicles were previously used as hire vehicles by our sister company, EVision Electric Vehicles. What’s more is that our second hand EVs come with low mileage and only one previous keeper.

We have a wide variety of second hand electric vehicles available to purchase, including the Tesla Model S, BMW i3 and Renault ZOE. Plus, new electric vehicles are constantly being added to our EV sales stocklist.

You can check out all of our electric vehicles here. If you do not see anything on our site, be sure to get in touch, to see what else will soon be available. You can contact our friendly team on 01634 914 063 or via email at mail@evbuy.co.uk.
